In the presence of the GPIC Managing Director H.E. Mr. Anwar Saeed bin Salamah and GPIC General Manager Mr. Abdulrahman Jawahery, the Company honored the first national operating crew of the Carbon Dioxide Recovery (CDR) Project.

The new recovery unit was inaugurated earlier by H.E Shaikh Isa bin Ali AL Khalifa, Advisor to HRM the Prime Minister for Oil and Industrial Affairs and GPIC Board Chairman on December 24, 2009 and it is now the first project of its kind in the Middle East.

The 450 MT/day Carbon Dioxide Recovery (CDR) Project, cut down Green House Gas (GHG) emissions and improve overall efficiency of resources. Captured CO2 is used as feedstock for urea and methanol synthesis processes. The technology which was installed by the Japanese Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd., can recover approximately 90% of the CO2 in flue gas.

During the ceremony, H.E. Mr. ben Salamah praised the unique team spirit and professionalism of the project operators which paved the way for significant achievements affecting the Company’s productivity and high reputation.

For his part, GPIC General Manager Mr. Abdul Rahman Jawahery affirmed the GPIC’s keenness to develop national workforce and provide them with the opportunity to gain experience and knowledge needed to boost such industry. "Bahraini workers are always capable of being creative and making positive contributions if they are looked after and given the training and development opportunity." He added.

Meanwhile, the CDR project is aligned with Bahrain’s Economic Vision 2030, and comes in accordance with the country’s effort to compact the climate change. The project was developed under the United Nations’ Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) and was presented during the climate change conference held last December in Copenhagen.
