28 November 2017

A high-level delegation of the Gulf Petrochemical Industries Company (GPIC), headed by Board of Directors Chairman H.E. Dr. Ahmed Al Sharyan, took part in the 11th Annual Forum of the Gulf Petrochemicals and Chemicals Union (GPCA) in Dubai. Several expert speakers presented specialized working papers during the event.

GPCA Chairman H.E. Mr. Yousef Al Bunyan, who opened the conference, said the GCC petrochemical sector needed more mergers and acquisitions among companies, in addition to them taking measures that would reduce costs and increase productivity. He said this was the only way to keep the petrochemical industry competitive.

GPIC President Dr. Abdulrahman Jawahery said the Company has been actively involved in all GPCA events since 2006. He said the forum is an opportunity to benefit from experts in the field of petrochemicals and chemicals, who spoke about major developments in industry. He noted the extensive discussions during the event, which focused on growth and value through innovation and its role in the sustainability of the petrochemical industry in the region.

He said the participation of more than 2,000 executives and top companies from 52 countries has contributed to a rich exchange of views, expertise and knowledge among the participants. He added the petrochemical sector is gaining in importance as the growth rate in the region is higher than the global growth rate in spite of market volatility and intense competition.

He said the sector grew by 3.7 per cent in 2016, increasing its production capacity to 150 million tons, surpassing the global average of 2.2 per cent. He said it is expected the growth would continue in 2017-18 and shift the focus from materials and basic chemical products to high-value specialized products.

Dr. Jawahery said GPIC’s participation in an accompanying exhibition highlighted its achievements, with visitors to its pavilion praising its development projects.

GPCA Secretary General Dr. Abdulwahab Al Saadoon praised GPIC’s positive participation and said the Company is one of the pillars of the petrochemical and fertilizer industry in the Gulf region.

Over the last decade, the GPCA Forum has established its position as a regional and global platform that attracts regional and international energy executives to discuss and exchange views on pressing issues affecting the sector's growth and how to develop it in the future.

The GPCA is the first gathering of its kind in the Middle East, and has witnessed a steady expansion in its activities since its establishment in March 2006.

It has achieved a new dimension in its mission by creating a discussion forum and a platform through which petrochemicals and chemicals companies communicate and share their concepts and ideas. It has gained a good reputation since its inception to guide the sector in the region towards a new level of fruitful cooperation.

The GPCA aims to strengthen the role of the region’s countries in formulating policies and regulations related to the chemical and petrochemical sector in all fields to ensure sustainable and socially responsible growth.

It provides opportunities for member companies to communicate across different platforms to exchange information and expertise to ensure development and prosperity of the chemicals, petrochemicals and related sectors in the Gulf region.
