09 August 2018

The Gulf Petrochemical Industries Company (GPIC) has brought out a children's education book to familiarize them with the objectives of sustainable development in a simplified way.

The goals seek to eradicate poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all. The book includes mental activities and colouring areas, while addressing the issues at hand.

The launch comes within the framework of GPIC's continued efforts to contribute to creating awareness of the goals.

Company President Dr. Abdulrahman Jawahery presented a copy to Board of Directors Chairman H.E. Dr. Ahmed Al Sharyan on the sidelines of GPIC’s summer activities. It was also distributed to participating children. Fun activities contained in the book centre around the definition of goals and efforts to make them a daily routine in society.

Dr. Jawahery said that targeting children at this early age stage would raise awareness and encourage them to practices that lead to achieving these goals. He said the initiative can also contribute to the creation of a conscious and positive generation.

The goals can be achieved through the cooperation of members of society, young and old, and represent a global call for action to address and eradicate the root causes of poverty and to protect the planet, ensuring people enjoy peace and prosperity.

The President said the importance of these international goals is to strive for positive change for both people and the planet and added all the goals are closely related to one another.

The book has also been distributed to a number of official and private bodies in Bahrain. They praised the Company’s initiative and said the book would enrich children's knowledge and make them more aware.

The goals are a global call to action for poverty eradication and human protection. These are based on the successes in achieving the Millennium Development Goals (2000-2015) as well as addressing new areas such as climate change, economic inequality, promotion of innovation, sustainable consumption, peace and justice.

In September 2015, the United Nations General Assembly approved the implementation of the goals by 2030. These objectives provide clear guidelines and goals for all countries to adopt in accordance with their priorities, considering the various environmental challenges facing the world as a whole.

GPIC has made great efforts to implement the goals in the Company's activities and programmes. It has developed strategies that reflect its firm desire to embed the principles of sustainability within its corporate culture and translate it as daily behaviour that all members are committed to.
