GPIC continues its achievements and contributions to the Petrochemical and Agri-Nutrients sector.

Dr. Al Sharyan: As the health crisis continues, the Company continued moving forward with implementing its flexible policies, while its professional workforce continued to win more awards.

As the Kingdom of Bahrain and the world is still in the midst of the COVID-19 crisis, GPIC continued implementing the flexible policies and procedures recommended by its Board of Directors. Policies that included plans and strategies to ensure the company’s safe sustainable operations, whilst putting the safety of its workforce as their number one priority.  

Due to GPIC’s efficient and effective response to the pandemic it has not faced any significant challenges in mitigating the number of infections among its workforce.  It became apparent that the company’s success in implementing the procedures to contain infections and protect its employees was due to its foresight and the proactive approach it took in combating the spread of the virus as an enterprise risk. 

In his comprehensive end of year statement, the Chairman of GPIC Dr. Al Sharyan has expressed his wishes for the New Year to bring about a further decline in infections and for the international markets to rejuvenate. Dr Al Sharyan continued that he would like to see the economic conditions return to how they were before the COVID-19 and that life becomes a little more normal again.  He also commended the awareness of the employees and the wise foresight of the Board of Directors in enforcing the strict measures aimed to protect the employees and their families from contracting Coronavirus. In addition to ensuring that company operations remain unaffected, especially given the importance of the Petrochemical and Agri-Nutrient Industry and its connection to food security. The excellent and close cooperation between the company’s workforce and its management was a significant factor that enabled GPIC to overcome these challenges. 

The Chairman also confirmed that despite the challenging circumstances, the company continued to achieve and win many of prestigious awards, the first of which, were the MRM Business Award, and the MRM Business Innovation Award. GPIC was also able to maintain its record of no lost-time accidents since 2002, where both the company employees and its contractors have contributed to achieving more than 35 million hours of no lost-time accidents, a milestone that GPIC holds in very high regard. He also added that GPIC’s excellence was not limited to these milestones, but it was also able to demonstrate its excellence with winning the International Safety Award from the British Safety Council and RoSPA’s award, from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents. 

Dr. Ahmed Al Sharyan extended his thanks and gratitude to the wise leadership of the Kingdom of Bahrain headed by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa; His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa the Crown Prince, Deputy Supreme Commander and Prime Minister; and to His Highness, Sheikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Chairman of the National Oil & Gas Holding Company. Not only for their support to the company, but to the entire industry. He also extended his thanks to their Excellencies the shareholders for their support to help the company to navigate this crisis, and to the Board Members for formulating and putting forth the plans and policies that suited these extenuating circumstances. Finally, he thanked the Executive Management Team and the employees for their cooperation and limitless dedication to achieving the goals of 2021.

The Chairman of GPIC has especially extended his thanks to GPIC’s Labor Union for their continuous cooperation with the management in order to protect and preserve the workforce’s best interest, commending their efforts in spreading awareness about the importance of adhering to the safety and protective procedures in place during these challenging times. 

His Excellency expressed his wishes that the year 2022 would bring with it better conditions, not only with a decline in COVID infections, but also with a more normal lifestyle.  He concluded by wishing everyone good health and prosperity.  

The President of GPIC, Mr. Yasser Alabbasi explained that the company enjoyed operational milestones, which saw an increase in production by 7.7% compared to the production budget for 2021. This represents an increase of 1.1% and excludes the expenditure saved due to postponing the Major Turnaround originally scheduled for 2021 into 2022. Plant Operations have also managed to achieve a growth of 9% in product export compared to the export plans of 2021, representing an increase of 1%, which excludes the Major Turnaround expenditure.  The Ammonia plant completed 1,068 days of continuous daily production on March 30, 2021, a new record surpassing the previous record of 950 production days achieved in 2012, while the Urea plant completed 1,070 days of continuous daily production on March 30, 2021, a new record surpassing the previous record of 941 production days achieved in 2012.

The President confirmed that the company has continued, despite the unprecedented circumstances to win awards and achieve excellence at all levels. He added that GPIC employees have worked diligently to ensure the company’s operational continuity and profitability during the year.  This was with the challenges of the international supply and demand disruption and significantly impacted prices and production capabilities.

In terms of local, regional and international awards, the most prestigious award achieved was winning the Arabian Corporate Social Responsibility Award in the major businesses category for the seventh consecutive year. In addition to two awards in the partnership and cooperation categories, as well as being awarded the Best Contract Management Team Award for 2021 during the Middle East Procurement Conference.

The President said that the company was proud to obtain ISO certifications for different areas of operation, such as ISO 9001 (Quality Management), ISO 14001 (Environmental Management Systems), ISO 45001 (Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems), ISO 22301 (International Standard for Business Continuity Management) and ISO 27001 (Information Security Management). 

He added that the company had also obtained the ISO 50001 (Energy Management), RC 14001 (Responsible Care Certification), ISO 17020 (Conformity Assessment), ISO 17025 (Testing and Calibration Laboratories) and finally, ISO 31000 (Risk Management).

Mr. Alabbasi spoke about the excellence achieved by GPIC in the field of environmental care, and said that with the company’s ongoing enthusiasm to adopt initiatives that have successfully contributed to reducing environmental damage resulting from the company operations. One of the most important environmental achievements during 2021 was in reducing the daily gas consumption by shutting down the Carbon Dioxide Recovery Unit’s (CDR) steam boiler and utilizing the conserved natural gas to generate more power and thereby reducing the total cost of energy as well as the company’s carbon footprint.  

He concluded by extending his appreciation and gratitude to chairman of GPIC and Board Members for their trust and guidance and to the wise leadership of the Kingdom of Bahrain. Headed by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa; His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa the Crown Prince, Deputy Supreme Commander and Prime Minister. While at the same time, applauded the guidance and hands-on involvement of His Highness Sheikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Chairman of the National Oil & Gas Holding Company who diligently followed all the companies operating under the umbrella of the National Oil & Gas Holding Company.

The President confirmed that with the cooperation of his colleagues in the management team and all the employees to follow the vision set forth by the Board Members, GPIC would continue to grow on its path to excellence.  All the milestones and the successes, which GPIC enjoyed, were the outcomes of the wise planning and strategies formulated by a team of capable Board Members. The Board Members were able to mature their plans, translating them into tangible results by relying on the gracious and limitless support extended by the country’s wise leadership to the energy sector.
