Adding to the company’s long record of safety excellence, Gulf Petrochemical Industries Company (GPIC) achieved an unprecedented record of 10,000 days of No Loss Time Accident despite the challenges of the Coronavirus Pandemic.

This record was achieved despite the crisis the world faced with the onslaught of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has affected all aspects of life and brought many unforeseen trials. 

In a statement GPIC’s President Dr. Abdulrahman Jawahery expressed his pride at this remarkable record, especially as it was achieved in such difficult times.  Despite all the challenges posed, we have been successful in terms of safety, health, environmental protection and reliability of our plants he added. 

Dr Jawahery explained that in response to the crisis, GPIC quickly focused on its most critical needs and the safety and sustainability of the plants and production.  Being fully aware that the company was not immune to the possibility of its workforce being exposed to the virus, GPIC implemented a series of preventative measures and developed flexible policies with the aim of protecting the workforce and at the same time ensuring sustainable operations.  Their Excellencies the Chairman and members of the Board of Directors expressed their thanks and appreciation to the Executive Management Team and all employees for demonstrating an unparalleled level of commitment, resilience and professionalism during these unusual times. 

He continued, there is no doubt that such a remarkable achievement would not have been possible without the blessings of Allah and the support of the Kingdom’s wise leadership, who took confident and determined steps to confront the pandemic.  They also continued to support not only GPIC but also the entire industrial sector.  We applaud as well the wise directives and direct supervision of the National Oil and Gas Authority, and our shareholders SABIC Agri-Nutrients Investment Company (SANIC) and Petrochemical Industries Company (PIC) for their encouragement in overcoming this crisis.  Their Excellencies the Chairman and members of the Board of Directors were also keen to implement the best approaches to protect the company during these difficult times. 

Dr. Jawahery also spoke of the company’s long history of established safety practices and protocols at the complex, where employee safety is of critical importance.  GPIC has implemented an integrated safety management approach to ensure that safety is incorporated into the planning and execution of all work and GPIC is committed to ongoing and continuous efforts to improve safety performance at all levels.   All these initiatives are reflected the company’s unique and unparalleled safety record. 

Dr. Jawahery extended his appreciation to the company employees.  GPIC’s resilience to overcome this year’s challenges is down to the incredible GPIC team, the company’s employees through their loyalty, discipline and professionalism have contributed significantly to this remarkable achievement.  The entire business has continued to implement and seek out new opportunities in enhancing safety, optimizing costs, and operating our plants with the utmost efficiency and effectiveness in production and quality of product.

Concluding Dr. Jawahery expressed his wish that the company continues to work diligently to achieve a yet another 10,000 days of safety with the grace of God almighty. 

Gulf Petrochemical Industries Company has continued to excel in the field of occupational safety during 2020, and was presented with the International Safety Award by the British Safety Council, in addition to the RoSPA safety award from the United Kingdom. GPIC is considered one of the most distinguished and celebrated companies in the field of occupational safety worldwide as it had previously won the Robert Campbell Award for Safety, Health and Environment from the National Safety Council in the United States of America.  This is in addition to winning the Sir George Earl Medal from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA). 

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) has chosen Dr. Abdulrahman Jawahery to be the ambassador for its awards.  This is a gesture of appreciation for the valuable contributions made by Dr. Jawahery one of the most successful Ambassadors in the industry, a position that was created by RoSPA with the aim of strengthening the ties and cooperation between the organisations.
